Reuters reported on June 29 that billionaire Warren Buffett has just donated an additional $5.3 billion in Berkshire Hathaway shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four family charities, the largest annual donation since he began in 2006.

The latest donation brings the 94-year-old billionaire's total donations to charities to about $57 billion.

The donation includes about 13 million Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway, a US-based multinational conglomerate that owns all or part of the stocks of many companies in various sectors. The group is worth about $880 billion.

Mr. Buffett has donated 9.93 million shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and has donated more than $43 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock in total.

He also donated 993,035 shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his late first wife, and 695,122 shares to each of three charities led by his children Howard, Susan and Peter: the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation and the NoVo Foundation.

The billionaire plans to give away more than 99% of the fortune he has built at Berkshire Hathaway, which he has run since 1965, with his children serving as executors.

He still owns 14.5% of Berkshire's outstanding shares despite giving away more than half of his shares since 2006.
