Updated data from the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) shows that since early morning on August 4, along with high temperatures, electricity consumption in all three regions has increased rapidly.
At 5:00 a.m., the national electricity consumption was only over 36,000 MW but quickly increased to 51,169.9 MW at 10:00 a.m. The national electricity consumption continued to increase sharply at noon and reached a peak of 57,180.7 MW at 2:30 p.m. This is also a new historical peak of national electricity consumption recorded. Compared to the peak capacity of the national electricity system (set a new record on June 2, 2025 with 51,672 MW at 1:40 p.m.), the national electricity consumption after 2 months has increased by 5,508.7 MW.

Notably, the amount of electricity consumed in the Northern region also increased sharply at noon, increasing by 2,226 MW (equivalent to the total capacity of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant), from 27,098.7 MW at 11:00 to 29,324.8 MW at 13:30. Previously, on June 2, the power consumption in the North set a record with approximately 26,500 MW.
Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVNHANOI) also said that Hanoi is experiencing a prolonged and severe heat wave, causing the demand for electricity, especially for cooling equipment, to skyrocket.
EVNHANOI recorded that the city's electricity consumption capacity in recent days has reached an all-time high and peaked at 5,988 MW at 1:20 p.m. on August 4, 2025.
Previously, at 1:42 p.m. on July 30, 2025, the city's peak capacity (Pmax) reached 5,608.6 MW - an increase of about 6.6% compared to the peak in the same period in 2024. This is the highest number ever recorded in the history of the capital's power grid operation. However, this record was quickly surpassed in less than a week. Specifically, at 1:20 p.m. on August 4, 2025, the power consumption continued to set a new peak, reaching 5,988 MW, equivalent to an increase of approximately 14% compared to the peak capacity in 2024. This sudden increase reflects the skyrocketing demand for electricity due to the prolonged hot weather, especially in households using air conditioners and fans.

According to EVNHANOI, the outdoor temperature is constantly maintained at 37 - 39 degrees Celsius, causing devices such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and electric fans to operate more and longer to maintain efficiency. This leads to increased electricity consumption even though the usage time remains unchanged.
Prolonged hot weather poses a risk of power grid failures due to many electrical devices operating outdoors in high temperature environments; some power lines and transformer stations are overloaded at certain times. Therefore, EVNHANOI recommends that customers, offices and production facilities join hands to use electricity economically and effectively, turn off unnecessary electrical devices and limit the use of high-capacity devices during peak electricity consumption hours from 12:00 to 15:00 and from 22:00 to midnight every day . At the same time, pay attention to the reasonable use of air conditioners (set at 26 degrees Celsius or higher, use in combination with fans). In addition, using devices labeled as energy-saving, regular maintenance of air conditioners and refrigerators are also effective ways to reduce electricity consumption.
To support people to proactively monitor their daily household electricity consumption, EVNHANOI recommends that people monitor through EVNHANOI's customer care ecosystem such as the EVNHANOI App or the website evnhanoi.vn. Through these platforms, customers can check meter readings, compare consumption between periods, and especially set warning thresholds to receive timely information when electricity output exceeds the allowed threshold. This is an effective solution for people to adjust their electricity usage behavior from the beginning, instead of waiting until the end of the month to be "shocked" by the bill.
“Using electricity economically not only brings direct economic benefits to each household but also helps protect the power system, reduces the risk of local overload and ensures stable power supply for the entire city during peak hot days. With the message “Saving electricity - Making it a habit”, EVNHANOI hopes that the cooperation of each citizen will contribute to building a civilized, safe and sustainable electricity-using community”, EVNHANOI said.

Use electrical appliances wisely to avoid high electricity bills.
Faced with complicated weather conditions, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that people and businesses increase their efforts to save electricity. Accordingly, during extremely hot days, the demand for electricity increases. Air conditioners, electric fans, coolers, etc. operate at full capacity, which can increase electricity bills if not used properly.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, to avoid a sharp increase in electricity bills, electricity users need to pay special attention to using electrical appliances in the home effectively and reasonably. As with air conditioners, it is necessary to choose a machine with a capacity suitable for the room area. Set the temperature from 26 degrees Celsius or higher, the difference from the outside temperature is about 5 degrees Celsius. In particular, you should close the doors when using the air conditioner and periodically clean the filter for the machine to operate more effectively. If used during the day, just turn it on at 26 - 28 degrees Celsius combined with turning on the fan to help the air circulate better and cool faster. The air conditioner temperature at night should be set at 25 - 27 degrees Celsius combined with turning on the fan.
With the refrigerator, you should limit opening and closing many times. Let the food cool before putting it in the refrigerator. Do not put hot food or too much food in the refrigerator. The refrigerator should be placed in a cool place, away from heat sources. When using, the refrigerator should be set at 3 - 6 degrees Celsius in cold mode and from - 18 to - 15 degrees Celsius in freezing mode. With water heaters, you should only turn them on 30 minutes before use instead of leaving them on 24/7. Along with that, to use electrical equipment effectively, you should prioritize devices with energy labels (the higher the star number, the more energy-saving) and devices with Inverter technology (more energy-saving than conventional types). In addition, turn off devices when not in use, perform regular maintenance and avoid using too much capacity to save electricity and protect the device.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade affirmed that using electricity economically and efficiently not only helps reduce electricity bills, but also contributes significantly to ensuring national energy security, especially during the peak summer season of 2025.
