Recently, ByteDance - TikTok's parent company - announced that it would lay off hundreds of employees to focus on censorship supported by artificial intelligence (AI).

TikTok’s global layoffs of hundreds of employees are part of the company’s digital transformation and automation efforts. ByteDance said it will use more AI tools to moderate content to improve efficiency in its operations.

An estimated 500 employees in Malaysia will be affected by the layoffs. Many employees said they received termination notices via email in the middle of last week. Similar cuts are likely in the near future as the company works out strategies for each region.

In a statement, a TikTok spokesperson said: "We are making these changes to strengthen our global operating model for content moderation."

ByteDance also revealed plans to invest $2 billion in trust and safety initiatives globally by 2024, with much of the content moderation work already automated. According to TikTok, 80% of harmful or violating content is now removed using AI technology.

Currently, short -video sharing app TikTok uses both automated detection technology and human moderators to evaluate content shared on the platform, but is increasingly relying on technology.

This is TikTok’s latest round of layoffs in 2024. In January, 60 sales and advertising employees lost their jobs. In April, TikTok cut more than 250 jobs in Ireland, and in May, it cut about 1,000 jobs in operations and marketing.
