President Joe Biden is facing criticism from lawmakers from both parties in the US for his re-election campaign joining TikTok.

Several Republican senators have criticized Mr. Biden for joining TikTok, a social network that has raised concerns about data privacy and national security, according to The Hill on February 12. TikTok is a subsidiary of ByteDance, a company based in Beijing.

Senator Tom Cotton said TikTok is a Chinese spy app, "used to target American children with propaganda and steal data." "It's a shame that Biden is using TikTok to make up for poor poll numbers due to his mental decline," the Republican senator commented on Twitter.

Senator Joni Ernst, also a Republican, noted that Mr. Biden signed a regulation in December 2022 that banned the installation of TikTok on federal devices because of the threat to national security. Ms. Ernst said that even that would not prevent Mr. Biden’s campaign from using the “dangerous propaganda app” from China.

Democratic Senator Mark Warner also expressed concern about President Biden's decision, saying that China would get the data and could find a way to show it what it wants Americans to see.

What did Mr. Biden say about being judged to have a 'poor memory'?

Mr Warner, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, last year introduced legislation with Republican Senator John Thune that would allow the Commerce Department to inspect and ban technologies linked to foreign governments. TikTok has denied any links to the Chinese government. “I think we still need to figure out how to follow India’s lead in banning TikTok,” Mr Warner said.
