AFP news agency on December 21 quoted a White House statement saying that US President Joe Biden has just approved $571.3 million in military aid to Taiwan, as he prepares to leave office before President Donald Trump's inauguration in January.

Accordingly, Mr. Biden approved withdrawing "up to $571.3 million in Department of Defense defense and services, as well as military education and training, to support Taiwan."

The White House statement did not provide details about the military aid package, which comes less than three months after a similar $567 million package was approved.

Earlier this week, Taiwan received 38 advanced Abrams tanks from the US, believed to be its first new tanks in 30 years.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry on December 21 thanked the United States for its "unwavering security commitment to Taiwan."

"Taiwan and the United States will continue to cooperate closely on security issues to maintain peace , stability and the status quo across the Taiwan Strait," the agency said in a statement, adding that it would not comment on the "content" of the aid "based on the tacit agreement between Taiwan and the United States."

Beijing has repeatedly denounced international support for Taiwan and accused the US of meddling in its internal affairs. Beijing has said it will never renounce the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control and has also stepped up its rhetoric that the island's "unification" is "inevitable."
