The inauguration took place a week after the constitutional council confirmed that Deby had won the May 6 election with 61 percent of the vote, despite opposition leader and Prime Minister Succes Masra, who won 18.5 percent of the vote, challenging the result.

On May 22, Mr. Masra resigned as Prime Minister and did not attend the inauguration ceremony of President Deby.

Following the inauguration, President Deby appointed Mr. Allamaye Halina as the country's new prime minister to replace Mr. Masra.

Mr Halina, former Director of State Protocol and Chad's Ambassador to China, will now have to form a new government as quickly as possible.

Chad is the first of the countries in the West-Central African region that have experienced coups in the past four years to hold elections.
