South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol continues to fail to respond to a second summons from anti-corruption agencies following the controversial imposition of martial law.

According to Reuters, South Korean President Yoon did not appear at the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO) at 10:00 a.m. on December 25 (local time) as requested. This is the second time Mr. Yoon has "ignored" the CIO's request, after failing to comply with the first summons on December 15. Currently, the CIO is still waiting for President Yoon's appearance at the end of the day on December 25.

In case Mr. Yoon still fails to appear, the CIO said they will seek an arrest warrant or send a third summons. Mr. Yoon's repeated disregard for the summons and failure to participate in questioning has drawn criticism and calls for his arrest from the opposition, citing concerns about the possibility of destroying evidence.

Previously, speaking on television on December 7 (4 days after declaring martial law), President Yoon affirmed that he would not shirk legal and political responsibility for his actions.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Impeached

President Yoon’s lawyer Seok Dong-hyeon said on December 24 that the South Korean leader prioritizes following the Constitutional Court’s procedures for impeachment and plans to make a separate statement in the trial that will take place after Christmas. The Constitutional Court will hold the first preliminary hearing on Yoon’s impeachment on December 27.

The hearing will not have a "decisive" impact on the anti-corruption agency's next steps, a CIO official said, noting that it is just one factor to consider, Yonhap reported.

In another development, the opposition majority in the South Korean National Assembly announced that they will propose impeaching Acting President Han Duck-soo on December 26 if he does not sign special laws to investigate Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol.
