Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged allies to invest in minerals and said Ukraine must keep 'all this' because it represents 'security guarantees'.

AFP news agency on February 8 quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calling on allies to invest in mineral resources, after US President Donald Trump wanted the country to take rare earths in exchange for military aid.

"We have mineral resources. This does not mean that we give them to anyone, even a strategic partner," Mr Zelensky posted on social media, citing his answer in an earlier interview with the media.

Ukrainian President: 'Let's make a deal' with Trump on resource sharing

"It's all about partnerships. Let's invest. Let's grow together and make money," the leader urged.

Earlier, President Trump said he was "looking to make a deal with Ukraine where they will guarantee what we give them in rare earths and other things."

Mr Zelensky said Ukraine's mineral resources were worth "trillions of dollars", referring to titanium and uranium reserves that he described as the largest in Europe.

According to him, it is very important that Ukraine keeps "all of this" because they represent "security guarantees", adding that he does not want the resources to fall into the hands of Russia.

Following Mr Trump's remarks, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that "we are helping (Ukraine) without asking for anything in return, this should be everyone's view".

On February 7, Mr. Trump said that it was possible that he would meet Mr. Zelensky next week at a location outside Ukraine.

On social media X, Mr Zelensky later wrote that Ukraine and the US were “planning meetings and negotiations” and “working out the details”, although he did not confirm a meeting with Mr Trump next week. Mr Trump has urged both Moscow and Kyiv to negotiate an end to the fighting.
