Ho Chi Minh City bans teaching preschool children before grade 1

VnExpressVnExpress21/04/2024

Preschools are not allowed to teach the first grade curriculum in advance, in any form, as required by the Department of Education and Training.

Ms. Luong Thi Hong Diep, Head of the Preschool Education Department, said on April 21 that according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , preschools are not allowed to teach knowledge in advance of grade 1. However, many parents are worried and afraid that their children are not well prepared for primary school, so they ask preschool teachers to teach or send their children to study outside of grade 1.

According to her, this is unscientific . Because the content and topics of knowledge taught must be appropriate to the development of each age group. Forcing children to concentrate for a long time on inappropriate topics can make them afraid of learning.

"In preschool, children are still introduced to, recognize letters, count numbers, how to hold a pen, and sit in a study position. Kindergarten teachers are also the most experienced people in each school, so parents can rest assured," said Ms. Diep.

To prepare children for and be excited about entering first grade, the Department of Preschool Education also requires schools to let children visit and learn about elementary schools in the neighborhood or organize mock classes.

Ho Chi Minh City currently has about 330,000 children of preschool age. According to the plan of the City People's Committee, children will have summer vacation from the end of May.

The requirement not to teach the first grade curriculum in advance was made by the Ministry of Education and Training in 2013. However, in reality, many parents let their children practice reading and writing a year in advance to feel secure when entering first grade. In big cities, many private schools organize pre-primary classes with similar content.
