HCMC: More than 3,000 delegates lit candles in gratitude at 4 martyrs' cemeteries

On the evening of July 25, on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2025), the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union held a candle lighting ceremony to pay tribute to heroic martyrs at 4 cemeteries in the area, with the participation of more than 3,000 delegates.

The candle lighting ceremony was held simultaneously at: Ho Chi Minh City Martyrs Cemetery, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province Martyrs Cemetery (formerly), Binh Duong Province Martyrs Cemetery (formerly) and Dau Tieng Commune Martyrs Cemetery (formerly Binh Duong Province).

At the main point of the Ho Chi Minh City Martyrs' Cemetery, the ceremony was attended by comrades: Nguyen Thanh Nghi, member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee; Nguyen Van Dua, former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee; Nguyen Manh Cuong, member of the Standing Committee, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee of the City Party Committee; Ngo Minh Hai, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union... along with many leaders, former leaders of the City Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, departments, branches, unions and youth and student forces.

In a solemn and emotional atmosphere, the delegates respectfully bowed and observed a minute of silence to commemorate the heroic martyrs who did not spare their blood and bones, fought bravely, and sacrificed for national independence, for the happiness of the people, and for the cause of national reunification.

Comrade Nguyen Minh Nhut, Deputy Head of the Culture and Social Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, lit candles to pay tribute to heroic martyrs at the Ho Chi Minh City Martyrs Cemetery.

Immediately after the memorial service, leaders and more than 3,000 union members, youth, students, and children of the city together offered flowers, incense, and lit 25,000 candles of gratitude at the martyrs’ graves in 4 cemeteries. Each candle is a deep gratitude, a promise to continue from the young generation of the city today.

Representing the city’s youth, Ms. Nguyen Hoa Kim Thai, former Vice President of the Vietnam Student Association of the University of Economics and Law (VNU-HCM), expressed her deep gratitude to the heroic Vietnamese mothers, families of martyrs and those with meritorious services. At the same time, she affirmed that the young generation of Ho Chi Minh City today always remembers the heroic tradition of their fathers and brothers, continuing to build and protect the Fatherland with a sense of responsibility, creativity and patriotism.

"The youth of Ho Chi Minh City were once the ones who rushed forward and were ready to sacrifice during the years of fighting for national independence. And today, the youth of Ho Chi Minh City continue to be a generation that is grateful, loves their homeland, and is ready to pass on the ideal to the future," Ms. Nguyen Hoa Kim Thai affirmed.

Continuing the program, on July 26 and 27, the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union organized a series of gratitude activities in Con Dao special zone. The activities included: a flag-raising ceremony at the National Flagpole, visiting Hang Duong Cemetery and Hang Keo Cemetery; visiting and donating books and equipment to schools on the island; giving gifts to former political prisoners, families of martyrs, meritorious people and armed forces working in Con Dao.

In particular, the City Youth Union organized a candle lighting ceremony and an art program to commemorate the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day at Hang Duong Cemetery; and a death anniversary for heroic martyrs at Con Dao Temple.

The above series of activities is a highlight in the revolutionary tradition education work of Ho Chi Minh City youth. Each task performed, each candle lit is a word of gratitude, a promise from the young generation to continue the heroic and indomitable tradition of their fathers and brothers, arousing national pride and a sense of responsibility of the young generation of the city in the cause of building, protecting and developing the country today.

Through these activities, the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union hopes to strongly spread the spirit of “When drinking water, remember its source”, connect the city’s youth with the nation’s history and continue to light the flame of revolutionary ideals in the hearts of every young person.
