Artificial Intelligence: Türkiye Bans Access to Grok Chatbot

VHO - On July 9, a Turkish court ruled to ban access to the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok in the country, after the platform was said to have spread offensive content about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and several other figures. This is the first time Ankara has imposed a ban on access to an AI tool.

Media outlets reported that Grok had created content insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his late mother and several other figures while answering questions from users on the social network X. As a result, Ankara residents filed a petition to restrict the tool under Turkey's Internet law, citing a threat to public order.

A criminal court ruled in favor of the request and ordered the country’s Information and Communications Technology Authority (BTK) to enforce the ban. Following the ruling, BTK enforced the ban, citing violations of Turkish law, which makes insulting the president a criminal offense punishable by up to four years in prison.

This is just one of the controversies surrounding a new update to the chatbot developed by billionaire Elon Musk’s xAi company. Previously, Grok had spread anti-Semitic content and praised Adolf Hitler.

In response to the above information, a representative of the social network X issued a statement confirming that they were aware of the recent posts and immediately removed inappropriate content on the platform. The company xAi had just implemented measures to ban hate speech before Grok posted on the network X.
