North Korea says satellite interference is a declaration of war

VnExpressVnExpress02/12/2023

North Korea has warned that any US interference in the operations of its spy satellites would be a declaration of war.

"If the US wants to interfere with the rights of a sovereign country by treating its advanced technology as a weapon, we will exercise our right under domestic and international laws to reduce and eliminate the US reconnaissance satellite," KCNA news agency quoted a North Korean Defense Ministry spokesman as saying on December 2.

The spokesman said North Korea would regard any interference with its satellite operations as a declaration of war. The official also stressed that North Korean law stipulates that the country will conduct "war deterrence" if any attack on Pyongyang's strategic assets is imminent.

North Korea on November 21 successfully launched its first reconnaissance satellite, which it said was designed to monitor military activities of the United States and South Korea. Pyongyang later announced that the satellite had taken pictures of US and South Korean military bases, as well as the White House and the Pentagon, but has not released any images.

Asked whether Washington had the ability to disrupt the operations of North Korean reconnaissance satellites, a spokesman for the US Space Command said the country could disrupt its adversary's space capabilities using a variety of means.

The US, along with its allies Japan, South Korea and Australia, have imposed additional sanctions on North Korea over the satellite launch. This is the first time the US, Australia, Japan and South Korea have imposed sanctions on North Korea at the same time. The US, Japan and South Korea previously imposed sanctions on North Korea in September and December 2022.
