North Korea launched the Hwasal strategic cruise missile on March 22.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the North Korean Rocket Force conducted a test of a warhead designed for the strategic cruise missile "Hwasal-1 Ra-3" and test-fired a new air defense missile "Pyoljji-1-2" in the Yellow Sea on April 19, noting that the test-fire achieved "certain goals."

"Both tests were part of the regular work of the government and its affiliated national defense science institutes for rapid technological development and had nothing to do with the surrounding situation," KCNA said in an English-language post.

South Korea, Japan and the United States have yet to mention the tests, although they usually immediately release information whenever North Korea launches a missile test.

North Korea reveals shape of hypersonic missile

In February, North Korea said it conducted what it called a "super-large warhead power test of a cruise missile" and test-fired a new type of anti-aircraft missile in the Yellow Sea, according to Yonhap.

In early April, Pyongyang said it had tested a new medium-to-long range solid-fuel hypersonic missile. Leader Kim Jong-un personally oversaw the test launch.

North Korea has been under a series of international sanctions since its second nuclear test in 2009 but has continued its nuclear and weapons programs.

This year, North Korea declared South Korea its main enemy and abolished agencies responsible for reunification and bilateral communication, threatening to declare war if even an inch of land is invaded.
