A day earlier, South Korea reported the launch of two ballistic missiles by North Korea, saying the second missile likely failed shortly after launch, exploding in mid-air while flying over land. KCNA did not mention the second missile in its report.

The KCNA article said the test of the new tactical ballistic missile named Hwasongpho-11 Da-4.5 was conducted with a simulated heavy warhead to verify the stability and accuracy of the flight.
Also according to KCNA, North Korea's missile management agency will conduct another launch of the same type of missile next July to test the "destructive power" of the super-large warhead.
The Hwasongpho-11, or Hwasong-11, is a series of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) developed by North Korea, also known as the KN-23 and KN-24. The South Korean military said on Monday that the first of the two missiles appeared to be a KN-23 and flew about 600 kilometers.
The South Korean military said the second missile flew about 120 kilometers. Given its trajectory and launch location near the west coast, it likely landed on the North Korean mainland.
In recent years, North Korea has been racing to develop a series of ballistic missiles, code-named Hwasong, including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Hwasong means Mars in Korean.
