The bomb was removed in the early morning of October 24.

The bomb was discovered by locals on the afternoon of October 21, located about 200 meters downstream from pillar number 9 of Long Bien bridge. The bomb, coded M-118, is 210 cm long and 56 cm in diameter, and was left over from the war.

The bomb was discovered in extremely dangerous condition, still with the fuse, especially the fuse at the tail was rusted and still had more than 800 kg of explosives inside.

If the bomb is not detected and handled promptly, it could endanger people's lives and property, according to Colonel Nguyen Dang Chien, Head of the Propaganda Department, Engineering Corps.

The Long Bien District Military Command then moved the bomb closer to shore and assigned guards to wait for handling.

By dawn on October 24, the Long Bien District Military Command coordinated with the 544th Engineer Battalion and the Engineer Corps to successfully salvage the bomb and transfer it to Hoa Thach Shooting Range, Quoc Oai District.

Engineers will cut and use steam to separate the bomb casing and explosives. The work is expected to be completed tomorrow.

Previously, on October 10, a bomb of the same type was also successfully handled by the Long Bien District Military Command and the Engineering Corps.

During the US air war of destruction in the North (1965-1972), Long Bien Bridge was bombed 14 times, severely damaging 1,500 m of bridge and 4 pillars.
