China's Ministry of Commerce expressed concern on July 25 over protectionist measures planned by the European Union (EU) against its biofuel industry, warning that such measures would be counterproductive.

Speaking at a regular press conference in Beijing, ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian stressed that the EU's imposition of tariffs on Chinese biofuels will only increase product costs, undermine the interests of EU industries and consumers, and hinder the EU's green transformation efforts, as well as China-EU economic and trade cooperation.

The spokesperson stressed that China supports the prudent use of trade remedies and calls on the EU to avoid indiscriminate protectionist policies, calling for resolving the issue through dialogue and consultation.

The statement was made after the EU Biofuels Commission announced on July 19 that the European Commission (EC) will temporarily impose anti-dumping duties of 12.8-36.4% on biofuel imported from China within the next four weeks.

The EU, the world's largest biofuel market, imports biofuels from China to meet its significant consumption needs, helping to achieve its green transition and energy efficiency goals.
