The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in the UK has just acquired a medieval ivory sculpture for 2 million pounds (more than 2.5 million USD).

The ivory sculpture, named Deposition From The Cross, dates back to the 12th century and is approximately 18cm tall and is believed to have been carved in York, England. It depicts Saint Joseph of Arimathea gently lifting the body of Jesus from the cross.

The sculpture is part of the collection of John and Gertrude Hunt, an art dealer, and has been passed down to their heirs. The V&A says it ranks alongside two other 12th-century Romanesque objects of national importance in its collection: the English metalwork masterpiece The Gloucester Candlestick and the enamelled reliquary The Becket Casket.
