Vietnam U.19 women's team cannot overcome Thailand

The match that took place last night, June 18, at Thong Nhat Stadium between the U.19 Vietnamese women's team and the U.19 Thai women's team is a fateful match. Before 2025, Vietnam and Thailand had competed twice in the championship match. In the two finals in 2014 and 2023, the Vietnamese girls were defeated. Notably, this is the fourth consecutive time that the U.19 Vietnamese women's team has participated in the final match of the tournament, but has yet to reach the pinnacle of glory. Therefore, coach Okiyama Masahiko and his team are determined to win the championship at the tournament held at home.

Before the final, both teams showed their superiority over the rest of the tournament. The U.19 Vietnam women's team scored 20 goals in 4 matches and did not concede any. However, the Vietnamese girls faced a completely different challenge when facing young female players from the land of golden temples. Mr. Masahiko's team could not maintain their clean sheet record, losing 3 goals in the final match. Against the fast and technically skilled players of Thailand, any mistake by the U.19 Vietnam women's defense would have to be paid for. 2/3 of the goals scored by the U.19 Thailand women's team came from mistakes by Vietnamese players. Rinyaphat Moondong (minute 27), Kurisara Limpawanich (minute 62) and Phatcharaphorn Khuchuea (minute 68) scored for the away team.

Thailand U.19 women's team carefully studies their opponents

The Thai U.19 women's team also studied the playing style of the Vietnamese U.19 women's team very carefully. Coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian's team prevented most of the counter-attacks and coordination in the middle of the home team. In particular, outstanding players such as Luu Hoang Van and Ngan Thi Thanh Hieu were blocked and closely marked by the opponent, so they could not create breakthroughs. In addition, Coach Masahiko's students did not take advantage of the opportunities created in front of the opponent's penalty area. The only goal of the Vietnamese U.19 women's team in the final was scored by Do Thi Thuy Nga, from the penalty spot.

Vietnam's U.19 women's team has yet to break the "curse" of finishing second in the Southeast Asian U.19 women's tournament (after 4 times this tournament has been held), losing to Thailand in the final 3 times (in 2014, 2023 and 2025).

Previously, in the third-place match on the same afternoon, the Indonesian U.19 women's team beat Myanmar 6-5 in a penalty shootout (0-0 draw after 90 minutes of official play).
