According to VGC , Ubisoft is the latest gaming giant to announce massive layoffs. Specifically, on November 7, the French gaming company said it was cutting 124 jobs, with the layoffs mainly targeting its Canadian-based studio (Ubisoft Montreal).

In a statement to VGC, Ubisoft said: "Over the past few months, all teams within Ubisoft have been looking to streamline operations and improve collective efficiency to better position ourselves for long-term success."

“In that context, we are announcing that we are currently reorganizing the administrative functions of our Canadian studios, while reducing headcount at Hybride (our Montreal-based VFX studio) and in our global IT team, affecting a total of 124 positions.”

Kotaku previously reported that the company was instituting layoffs at the Ubisoft Montreal studio that produces Assassin's Creed and Far Cry , its largest internal development team with around 4,000 employees as of 2021. In September, the company also announced plans to close its Ubisoft London mobile studio, which is best known for the Hungry Shark series, putting 54 employees out of work.

Earlier this year, Ubisoft said it wanted to cut costs by around €200 million over the next two years through a targeted restructuring, eliminating some non-essential businesses and cost overruns, adding that it would continue to look at hiring more talent across its biggest brands and live services.

Job cuts in the gaming industry have been widespread in 2023. Companies affected by layoffs this year include Xbox Game Studios, Epic Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment, CD Projekt, Unity, Riot Games, Blizzard, Crystal Dynamics, BioWare, Striking Distance, Team17, Frontier Developments, and Telltale Games.
