Ukraine replaces a series of brigade commanders on the front line

VnExpressVnExpress03/03/2024

The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army announced a series of changes in brigade-level commanders on the eastern front, where they have been repeatedly pushed back by Russian forces.

General Oleksandr Syrsky, the new commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, announced on March 2 that he was inspecting the eastern front and immediately realized that the army needed to quickly reshuffle its command personnel at the brigade level.

"In just three days, I clearly saw why, with the same level of manpower, weapons and equipment, some brigades were able to stop the enemy's advance and hold the line, while others failed," General Syrsky shared on Telegram.

The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army said he had sent experts to assess ineffective brigades before replacing their commanders. "When some commanders could not control the situation, and their actions and orders threatened the lives and health of their soldiers, I was forced to make a decision to change personnel," he shared.

Syrsky added that he was withdrawing a brigade that had been fighting for two years to the rear to recuperate. Although General Syrsky did not disclose the unit's designation, Ukrainska Pravda identified it as the 110th Independent Motorized Rifle Brigade, which had defended the city of Avdeevka but had recently withdrawn.

General Syrsky said the situation on the front line was “difficult but manageable.” On March 1, he admitted that some Ukrainian military commanders had shown shortcomings in “perception and assessment of the enemy situation,” weakening the defense line in some areas.

Russian forces last week took control of the town of Avdeevka in Donetsk province, eastern Ukraine, after months of fighting. The Ukrainian military said this week it had withdrawn from two more villages near Avdeevka, losing more territory as support from Western allies dwindled.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on February 25 that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the fighting began two years ago. He stressed that Ukraine’s success or failure on the battlefield depends on support from its allies and partners. He also hoped that the US Congress would approve a military aid package for Ukraine in the near future.
