Application of artificial intelligence in cervical cancer screening

On June 23, the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine announced that it had just received and put into use the CerviCare AI device - a cervical cancer screening system using artificial intelligence (AI). This is a new step forward for the Institute in integrating modern technology into medical examination and treatment, especially in traditional medicine.

CerviCare AI is an AI application system for analyzing cervical imaging, using big data from more than 7 million standardized images. Analysis results are returned in just 5 seconds, supporting doctors to make quick and accurate assessments without being invasive.

This technology uses a medical camera to capture images, directly integrated with AI software to detect precancerous lesions and cervical cancer with a sensitivity of up to 98%; record and store image records, helping to systematically monitor disease progression and perform large-scale screening, especially effective in public health campaigns.

According to a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine, the CerviCare AI device not only improves the quality of medical examination and treatment at the Institute, but is also a strategic tool in cervical cancer screening programs for the community, contributing to protecting women's health - a population group that plays a key role in each family and society.

At the same time, it is said that the device will be actively applied in outpatient activities, especially in remote areas where women have little access to specialized medical services. This not only brings humanistic values, but also demonstrates the orientation of integrating and modernizing traditional medicine towards a comprehensive community approach, focusing on the patient.

In Korea, a study of 33,531 women in 2015–2016 showed that when comparing the effectiveness of screening methods such as Pap smear, HPV test, cervicography, and colposcopy with biopsy, the method using cervicography combined with AI gave positive results at reasonable cost – a strategic option for countries with high cervical cancer rates.

In Vietnam, a comparative study between the results of the Dr. Cervicam C20 device and cervical biopsy showed a sensitivity of 90.5% and a specificity of 84.2%. Currently, the CerviCare AI device is being deployed at 46 medical facilities nationwide, in 20 provinces and cities such as: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nghe An, Can Tho, Soc Trang, Phu Tho, Tien Giang , Dong Thap, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Nong, Vinh Long, Tay Ninh, Ca Mau...
