Vietnam 'harvests' international tourists in the first 10 months of 2024

Among the 10 largest tourist markets of Vietnam, Korea ranks first, followed by China, followed by Taiwan (China), the US, Japan, etc.

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, in the first 10 months of 2024, there were more than 14.1 million international visitors to Vietnam, an increase of 41.3% over the same period last year. In October 2024 alone, the tourism industry welcomed 1.42 million international visitors.

Of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam, visitors arriving by air reached nearly 12 million, accounting for 84.8% of international visitors to Vietnam and increasing by 36.9% over the same period last year.

Visitors to Vietnam by road reached nearly 2 million arrivals, accounting for 14% and increasing by 65.7%; by sea reached 189.1 thousand arrivals, accounting for 1.3% and increasing by 172.3%.

In terms of market size, Asia contributes nearly 80% of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam. The four major markets in Northeast Asia, including China, South Korea, Taiwan (China), and Japan, contribute nearly 60%.

Among the 10 largest markets for Vietnamese tourism, South Korea is the largest market sending visitors with 3.7 million arrivals (accounting for 26.4%). China ranked second, reaching 3.0 million arrivals (accounting for 21.3%). Taiwan (China) ranked third (1.0 million arrivals), the US ranked fourth (637 million arrivals), and Japan ranked fifth (585 thousand arrivals). Followed by Australia, India, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand.

In terms of growth drivers, major markets in Northeast Asia are the main drivers of international visitor growth. In particular, the Chinese market increased by 130.4% year-on-year in 2023, followed by South Korea (+28.5%), Japan (+24.8%), and Taiwan (+59.4%).

Nearby markets in Southeast Asia grew well, including Indonesia (+85.5%), Philippines (+64.5%), Laos (+13.9%), Cambodia (+12.1%), Malaysia (+5.5%), Singapore (+4.7%). India continued to grow well (+29.1%). The Thai market alone decreased by 13.3%.

Europe has seen positive growth, including key markets such as the UK (+20.4%), France (+30.5%), Germany (+23.6%). In addition, there are Italy (+54.5%), Spain (+23.3%), Russia (+81.5%), Denmark (+21.7%), Norway (+16.2%), Sweden (+24.9%). These are all markets that enjoy a unilateral visa exemption policy for entry into Vietnam with a temporary stay of up to 45 days, effective from August 15, 2023.

Notably, in October 2024, markets in Europe tended to increase compared to September 2024, including Russia up 7%, UK up 44%, France up 64%, Germany up 42%.

Also in the first 10 months of 2024, the number of domestic tourists is estimated at about 100.5 million. In October 2024 alone, this number is estimated at about 5.0 million visitors, of which about 3.3 million visitors have stayed. Accumulated number of domestic tourists in the first 10 months of 2024. Total revenue from tourists in the first 10 months of 2024 is estimated at about 690 trillion VND.

With the motivation from the open visa policy, along with the vibrant promotion and advertising activities in the last months of the year, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism expects the number of international visitors to Vietnam to continue to grow positively.
