Vietnam agrees and promotes peaceful and sustainable solutions to the Myanmar issue

Vietnam asks Myanmar to ensure security and create conditions for citizens to leave dangerous areas. About 700 Vietnamese citizens in Myanmar are still safe.

On May 29, in New York, the United States, the United Nations Security Council held an Arria-formula meeting on the situation in Myanmar with the participation of representatives of many United Nations member states, including all 15 Security Council members and 10 ASEAN countries.

At the meeting, most countries expressed deep concern about the escalating conflict in Myanmar, which has caused huge losses of civilian lives and forced many people to flee their homes.

The countries stressed the urgency of a ceasefire, ending violence, protecting civilians, especially women and children, and ensuring timely humanitarian assistance to the people.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that all solutions to the situation in Myanmar must ensure respect for the independence, sovereignty , territorial integrity and self-determination of the Myanmar people; in which the top priority now is to urge all relevant parties to implement a nationwide ceasefire and prevent humanitarian disasters.

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, spoke at the meeting.

These are necessary and urgent steps to build trust and substantive dialogue among relevant parties, towards achieving a sustainable solution to the Myanmar issue.

The Vietnamese representative affirmed that the Five-Point Consensus continues to be the most basic and appropriate framework to resolve the Myanmar issue, in which ASEAN continues to play a central role, alongside the efforts of each member, including Vietnam. The United Nations needs to support ASEAN in this process, contributing to creating a favorable environment to achieve sustainable peace that the people of Myanmar desire and deserve.

On this occasion, Vietnam welcomed the appointment of Ms. Julie Bishop as Special Envoy for Myanmar by the UN Secretary-General, and hoped that she would cooperate closely with the ASEAN Chair's Special Envoy to promote the resolution of the current crisis in Myanmar through dialogue and mutual understanding.
