Vietnam is in second place, what conditions are needed to get a ticket to the finals?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên25/10/2024

The second match of Group I of the 2025 AFC U-17 Championship qualifiers took place this evening (October 25). In the early match at 4 p.m., U.17 Yemen came from behind to defeat U.17 Kyrgyzstan 3-2 to earn all 6 points after 2 matches. In the match at 7 p.m., U.17 Vietnam defeated U.17 Myanmar 2-0 to maintain the chase with their opponents.

After two matches, U.17 Yemen is at the top of the table with 6 points, goal difference +6. U.17 Vietnam is second in the table with 4 points, goal difference +2. U.17 Kyrgyzstan is third with 1 point, goal difference -1. U.17 Myanmar is at the bottom of the table with 0 points, goal difference -7 and has definitely stopped in the qualifying round.

U.17 Vietnam ranked second in Group I

In the final round, U.17 Vietnam will face U.17 Yemen at 7:00 p.m. on October 27, while U.17 Kyrgyzstan will face U.17 Myanmar. All three teams still have a chance to continue.

If they want to take the top spot in the group to qualify directly for the 2025 AFC U-17 Championship, Vietnam U-17 must beat Yemen U-17 in the final match. The right to decide is still in the hands of coach Cristiano Roland and his team, although the match with the West Asian youth team will not be simple. Yemen U-17 has scored 9 goals in the past 2 matches, with a liberal and technical attacking style. Yemen U-17's fighting spirit is also commendable, when this team came from behind to defeat Kyrgyzstan U-17, despite the psychological barrier that haunted them throughout the match.

In case of a draw with U.17 Yemen, U.17 Vietnam is likely to be eliminated. Because the result against the bottom team does not count (U.17 Myanmar is likely to be at the bottom of the table), coach Roland and his team will only have 2 points, making it very difficult to compare the goal difference with other second-place teams. If they lose to U.17 Yemen, the door for U.17 Vietnam will be closed.

Vietnam U.17 needs a "final" victory to secure a ticket to the final round. Hopefully, after the victory over Myanmar U.17, Mr. Roland's students will be freed from the psychological burden to play the final match with the most comfortable mindset.
