With the support of experts from Vietnam Military Hospital 103, the Lao People's Army Central Hospital 103 has gradually mastered kidney transplant techniques, opening a new era in the country's medical sector. These efforts not only mark a great step forward in expertise but also symbolize the special friendship between Vietnam and Laos.
The first two kidney transplants
To this day, doctors at the 103 Central Hospital of the Lao People's Army still remember clearly the two kidney transplant surgeries performed on December 31, 2022, marking the first time Laos successfully performed kidney transplants from living donors. The two kidney transplant recipients were Mr. V.Kham V.xay (born in 1963, Nonsavang ward, Sikhotabong district, Vientiane capital) and Ms. V.Di N.Phon (born in 1998, Thakhaekkang commune, Thakhae district, Khammuouane province).
Accordingly, after a long period of careful preparation, two kidney transplants were performed from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the same day. Nearly 100 medical staff from the Lao People's Army's 103 Central Hospital, with the support of 8 experts from the Vietnam Military Hospital 103, performed these complex surgeries.
During the surgery, Vietnamese experts guide and strictly control the technique to ensure correct procedures, quality and safety. Doctors and nurses of the Lao People's Army 103 Central Hospital participate in all stages, and have some techniques performed independently.
After 10 days of surgery, the patients' transplanted kidneys functioned well, urea and creatinine levels gradually returned to normal, they had good appetites, and could walk around the hospital grounds...
