Vietnam earns over 14 million USD from longan exports

VnExpressVnExpress15/02/2024

Vietnam exported more than $14 million worth of longan fruit last year, up nearly 2.5 times from 2022, according to data from the General Department of Customs.

This is the fruit with the second largest export growth in 2023, after durian. Of which, China, Australia, Thailand and Japan are the countries that "prefer" Vietnamese longan the most.

For the Thai market, last year, Central Retail Group - the country's retail giant - also boosted exports of Vietnamese longan to Thailand. Mr. Paul Le, Vice President of Central Retail in Vietnam, said that Thai consumers really like Vietnamese longan. The output of longan exported by this group to Thailand in 2023 increased by about 40% compared to 2022.

In 2023, Vietnam's export price of longan will be stable. Currently, the price of Ido longan - a variety of longan from Thailand - purchased by traders at the garden fluctuates at 16,000-18,000 VND per kilogram. At this price, farmers earn a profit of 8-15 million VND per sao (1,000 m2).

Assessing the potential of longan in the coming time, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that China is the largest consumer market of Vietnamese longan and the demand of the world's second largest economy is very large. Therefore, if taking advantage of the advantages and improving export standards, Vietnamese longan will increasingly narrow the gap with Thai longan in this billion-people market.

Currently, longan is in the top 5 fruit trees with the largest area in the country with more than 80,000 hectares and an average output of about 600,000 tons per year.
