Canada and Türkiye have reached an agreement to resume the export of Canadian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) parts in exchange for greater transparency about where they will be used, The Globe and Mail reported on January 26.

Canadian Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Charlotte MacLeod said that although export controls remain in place, Ottawa wants to resolve the issue with Ankara as allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The deal will come into effect after Ankara completes its ratification of Sweden's bid to join NATO.

After 20 months of delay, Turkey quickly ratified Sweden's membership in NATO, including a parliamentary vote and presidential approval, last week.

Ankara is expected to send the documents to Washington to clear the way for Canada to immediately lift the export controls it has imposed since 2020.

Canada halted the sale of UAV technology to Ankara in 2020 after it was determined that Turkish-made UAV-mounted optical equipment had been used by Azerbaijan in fighting with Armenian forces in Nagorno Karabakh.

Also on January 26, the Pentagon said the US State Department had approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets and related equipment to Turkey in a deal worth an estimated $23 billion, after Ankara approved Sweden's accession to NATO.

According to the Pentagon, Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor for the deal.

A US official revealed that, as required by US law, the State Department notified Congress about the above deal and a sale of F-35 aircraft to Greece.
