Data from analytics firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) highlights eight common use cases for iPhone owners in the US, showing that 74% of users watch video at least once or twice a day. The data was collected over a 12-month period ending in March 2024.
Texting and internet usage are the main purposes of iPhone users
According to the data, messaging and internet use top the charts, with around 95% and 94% of iPhone owners texting or using the internet on their phones at least once a day. Taking and editing photos (61%) is another popular activity but one that iPhone owners spend the least time on among the various use cases. Gaming comes in second, with around 64% of iPhone owners playing games at least once a day.
While this number may seem low, it still means that 3 out of 5 iPhone owners take photos and edit them every day. Other common uses for the iPhone include email (81%), phone calls (80%), and music (71%).
The report discusses how the recently announced Apple Intelligence could impact iPhone use cases. Apple Intelligence includes a range of artificial intelligence (AI) features such as writing tools, email summarization, and smart email replies. These will enhance writing to benefit iPhone owners’ texting and emailing habits, along with AI-generated custom emojis to add a fun element. Some high-usage apps could take advantage of Siri’s improved capabilities to enhance the user experience when accessing information from the internet.
Given that camera improvements have driven device upgrades in the past, CIRP believes that the photography improvements Apple Intelligence offers could have a significant impact on iPhone users and perhaps drive upgrades to new devices to take advantage of these advancements.
Common uses like calling, listening to music, watching videos, and playing games are "less likely to be directly improved with Apple Intelligence," but Apple has finally added call recording and transcription to iOS 18, bringing some extra perks to users.
