Exports of rattan, bamboo, sedge and carpets brought Vietnam 594.8 million USD

In the first 9 months of 2024, Vietnam's export of rattan, bamboo, sedge and carpet products reached 594.8 million USD, an increase of 10.3% over the same period in 2023.


According to data from the General Department of Customs, in September 2024, Vietnam's export of rattan, bamboo, sedge, and carpet products reached 50.43 million USD, down 4.5% over the same period in 2023.

In the first 9 months of 2024, the export of rattan, bamboo, sedge and carpet products reached 594.8 million USD, an increase of 10.3% over the same period in 2023.

In terms of markets, the US remained Vietnam's largest export market in the first nine months of the year, reaching over US$247 million, up 21.4% year-on-year, accounting for 41.6%. In September alone, exports of rattan, bamboo, sedge and carpets to the US earned nearly US$20 million, up 12% compared to September 2023.

Ranked second is the Japanese market, reaching 45.4 million USD, down 11% over the same period in 2023, accounting for 7.6%.

The UK is Vietnam's third largest export market in this field, earning 31.6 million USD in the first 9 months of 2024, up 8.9% over the same period in 2023, accounting for 5.3%.

Positive signals from major markets such as the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom show that Vietnam’s rattan, bamboo, sedge and carpet export industry is on the rise. This not only helps increase economic value but also contributes to promoting the country’s image, affirming the position of Vietnamese handicraft products in the international market.

Currently, Vietnam is in the group of major exporters of rattan, bamboo, sedge, and carpet products. Experts say that the possibility of capturing 10-15% of the world market share is completely feasible.

There are many opportunities for Vietnam to dominate the rattan and bamboo market because the domestic bamboo area is up to 1.5 million hectares, distributed in most provinces across the country. Of which, 37/63 provinces have an area of over 10,000 hectares. Vietnam's bamboo resources are rich and diverse with hundreds of species, some of which have high economic value such as luong, long, truc sao, lo o, buong, tam vong, tre gai.

In particular, the whole country has over 1,000 bamboo and rattan craft villages, accounting for 24% of the total number of handicraft villages. Specifically, the Northern and Central regions focus on rattan, bamboo, leaf and sedge products, while the Southwestern region focuses on products made from water hyacinth and palm leaves.

Vietnam is highly appreciated with an average growth rate of 29.5% per year in this industry. Experts say that the possibility of capturing 10-15% of the world market share is completely feasible. The Handicraft Export Association says that the possibility of Vietnam capturing 10-15% of the world market share is completely feasible.

As the global bamboo market size is expected to reach 82.9 billion USD by 2028, rattan and bamboo could bring in billions of USD for Vietnam.

According to the General Department of Forestry, Vietnam's bamboo and rattan products are the group of products with the highest export value among non-timber forest products. In 2023, exports of bamboo and rattan products brought Vietnam more than 733 million USD. Along with China, Indonesia and the Philippines, Vietnam is one of the four largest bamboo and rattan exporting countries in the world.
