Sudan has been rocked by violence since mid-April, when tensions between the country's army, commanded by General Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, turned into fighting.

RSF condemned the attack. In a statement, the army said it did not target civilians, describing RSF's allegations as “false and misleading statements”.

Both sides have frequently used indiscriminate shelling and airstrikes, causing thousands of civilian casualties over the past five months.

In the Greater Khartoum region, which includes the cities of Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri, RSF troops have seized civilian homes and turned them into bases of operations. Human rights groups and activists say the military has responded by bombing these residential areas.

The war in Sudan has killed more than 4,000 people, according to August figures from the United Nations. However, doctors and activists say the real number is certainly much higher.
