Mexico About 1,200 couples got married on the outskirts of Mexico City, in a traditional Valentine's Day event in the town of Nezahualcoyotl.

Couples from across generations got married in the town square of Nezahualcoyotl on February 14. This annual tradition is called "matrimonio colectivo", or mass wedding.

Some people choose this form of wedding to save money. "Traditional weddings are very expensive," said Rosalin Ruiz, 28, who married her boyfriend Ricardo Reyes, 30.

Yosimar Carrasco and Alejandra Godinez, both 37, participated in the mass wedding hoping to have a "different experience", while Pilar Hernandez and Susana Inocente, both 40, saw it as an opportunity for the LGBTQ couple to have "equal rights" like everyone else.

"Love has no boundaries and we are proud to be part of this wedding," said gay couple Alejandro and Carlos.

Applause rang out in the square as Sonia Cruz, head of the state civil registry office, certified the marriages of the legal couples and invited them to kiss.

This year's ceremony, sponsored by the local mayor's office, also presented televisions and armchairs to the three longest-married couples in Nezahualcoyotl, including one who has been married for 50 years.

"It's a reminder that love can last a lifetime. We're proud to see many young couples following in our footsteps," said Dona Rosa, one of the longest-married women in Nezahualcoyotl.

A mass Valentine's Day wedding also took place in Nicaragua, with 200 couples tying the knot on the shores of Lake Xolotlan in the capital Managua.
