COGAT, the Israeli Defense Ministry agency that coordinates civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories, said it would continue to review the security situation to decide whether to keep the crossing open. However, it is likely that the Erez crossing will be temporarily closed again on September 29 and 30, as Israeli authorities do every year during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.

The Erez border crossing was closed after violent protests by Gaza residents ahead of the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur holidays. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the crackdown on violence at the border with Gaza would continue.

The Gaza Strip, home to some 2.3 million Palestinians, has been rocked by violent protests over the past two weeks, with protesters burning tyres, throwing stones and petrol bombs at Israeli troops, who have responded with tear gas and live ammunition.

According to figures from Hamas' Ministry of Health , since September 13, seven Palestinians have been killed and more than 100 injured in violence in Gaza.

At the same time, the Israeli army used drones to attack military sites of the Islamist group Hamas - the group that controls this land. In May, Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip killed 34 Palestinians and 1 Israeli.
