7 battleground states that will decide the race

Công LuậnCông Luận01/11/2024

(CLO) Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Kamala Harris have their own scenarios to win the US election next Tuesday (November 5), but in general, they both depend on the results in 7 battleground states.

The Road to Kamala Harris's Victory

Ms. Harris is projected to win at least 226 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia, with large contributions from California (54 electoral votes), New York (28) and Illinois (19).

Ms Harris would need at least 44 of the 93 electoral votes in battleground states to reach the minimum 270 electoral votes needed for the presidency.

Her easiest path would be to win the three battleground states with the most electoral votes — Pennsylvania (19), Georgia (16) and North Carolina (16) — to secure 51 electoral votes. But she currently trails Trump in all three, according to FiveThirtyEight's polling average.

However, Ms. Harris still has a chance to win 270 electoral votes by winning all four remaining battleground states (42 votes in total). Meanwhile, winning five or more battleground states will almost certainly guarantee the presidency for any candidate.

The path for Donald Trump to win

Republicans are projected to win at least 219 electoral votes (compared to Harris' projected 226) from 24 states nationwide, with big contributions from Texas (40), Florida (30) and Ohio (17).

To reach 270 electoral votes, Mr. Trump will need at least 51 of the 93 votes in battleground states.

Like the Democrats, his easiest path is to win Pennsylvania (19), Georgia (16) and North Carolina (16) to secure 51 electoral votes and bring the Republicans to the 270 electoral votes needed to win. He currently leads in all three states, according to poll trackers.

If Republicans don't win all three of those states, they'll need to win at least five of the seven battleground states to secure the presidency.

What happens if the result is a draw?

In the event that Ms Harris and Mr Trump both reach 269 electoral votes, a runoff vote will take place in which the US House of Representatives will decide the winner.

Each state delegation in the House of Representatives casts one vote, and a candidate must receive a majority (26 out of 50) of the state delegation's votes to win.

The US Senate then elects the vice president, with each senator casting one vote and needing a majority (51 votes) to win.
