(CLO) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that 915 trucks carrying aid entered the Gaza Strip on Monday (January 20). This is also the second day of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after 15 months of conflict.

According to OCHA, the information was provided by Israel and the ceasefire guarantors, the United States, Qatar and Egypt. Earlier on Sunday, about 630 aid trucks entered the Palestinian territory, of which at least 300 went to the northern Gaza area - where experts warn of the risk of famine.

The ceasefire agreement calls for at least 600 aid trucks to enter Gaza every day during the six-week truce, including 50 fuel trucks. Half of these aid trucks will go to northern Gaza.

According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA), a total of 2,892 aid trucks entered Gaza in December. The aid was delivered to the Gaza border area, where it was received and distributed by the UN.

However, looting and gangs have made distribution difficult. OCHA said that in December, only 2,230 trucks of aid – an average of 72 per day – were received and distributed. Between January 1 and 5, that number dropped to 51 trucks per day.

Israel has destroyed much of Gaza's infrastructure, forcing the 2.3 million people there to evacuate multiple times. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic".

Speaking to the UN Security Council, Mr. Guterres stressed that the organization still faced “significant obstacles and challenges.” He called on the parties involved – Israel and Hamas – to cooperate effectively with the UN to ensure the smooth delivery of aid, and proposed restoring order to prevent looting of aid.

He also called on countries to take in people in need of urgent medical treatment, allow commercial goods into Gaza and conduct mine clearance to ensure the safety of people.
