The Ahram Online newspaper reported that Mr. Abdelatty made the above call during a meeting with the Charge d'Affaires of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Stephanie Khoury in Cairo, emphasizing that the withdrawal of foreign troops from Libya will ensure the unity, safety and stability of this North African country.

He affirmed that Egypt will continue its efforts to help Libyan parties reach reconciliation and promote a solution based on consensus among the country's factions, until presidential and parliamentary elections are held in Libya.

According to Foreign Minister Abdelatty, Cairo wishes to strengthen cooperation with Ms. Khoury to contribute to the success of UNSMIL as well as help achieve a solution to the Libyan crisis.

For her part, Ms. Khoury appreciated Egypt's key role in the region, especially issues related to the Libyan crisis. She also expressed her desire to closely coordinate with Cairo to establish lasting stability throughout Libya.

Libya is still struggling to recover from years of conflict and chaos following the 2011 overthrow of dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

Since Libya's national elections, scheduled for late December 2021, were canceled at the last minute, factions in the North African country have been unable to resolve outstanding issues to pave the way for this important legislative process.

Libya is currently divided between a UN-recognized government based in Tripoli and a rival administration in the east. The oil-rich country has seen clashes between armed groups.
