As the Asia- Pacific (APAC) region faces a shortage of 2.1 million cybersecurity professionals by 2022, Kaspersky experts take a deep dive into how cybersecurity teams can leverage AI to strengthen their defenses against the region’s growing threats.

Saurabh Sharma, security expert at Kaspersky APAC's Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT), said that if cybercriminals can harness the power of AI, then cybersecurity forces can also use this technology for good.

“APAC will need to address a 52.4% cybersecurity talent shortage by 2022 as it is a key sector of the digital economy . This urgent need could push cybersecurity teams to use machine learning to enhance the defenses of organizations, and AI can support key areas such as threat intelligence, incident response, and threat analysis,” Sharma shared.

Kaspersky experts also revealed that with cybersecurity incident response, AI will detect abnormalities in operations, recognize the security level of an event log, thereby outlining a typical security incident and suggesting steps to search for malware.

As for threat analysis, or the stage where cyber defenders learn how the tools used in a cyber attack work, Sharma notes that technologies like ChatGPT can help identify key components in malware, decrypt malicious scripts, and create fake web servers with specific encryption schemes.

Sharma stressed that AI has clear benefits for cybersecurity teams, especially in automating data collection, improving mean time to resolution (MTTR) and limiting the impact of any incidents. If used effectively, the technology can also reduce the skill requirements for security analysts, but organizations should remember that intelligent machines can augment and complement human skills, but cannot replace them.
