AMD Overtakes Intel in Gaming CPU Sales

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên10/08/2023

According to Digitaltrends , TechEpiphany on X shared a report showing that out of the top 10 CPUs sold last week on Mindfactory, 9 were from AMD. The Core i5-13600KF was the only Intel CPU to make the top 10, and even that was only in last place with 150 sales like the Ryzen 5 5600. AMD's CPUs continue to dominate the sales charts despite their lack of an upgrade path from the AM4 socket.

AMD CPUs are on the way to transition to the AM5 socket standard

The top of the list is impressive, with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D at the top with 550 units sold. This is followed by the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 480 units sold. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D coming in at the top is a bit of a surprise, as it's simply a slight improvement over its predecessor. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a great gaming CPU, but it's on an older socket.

AMD is now shifting its focus to the AM5 socket, which means that PC builders with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D are locked into an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 RAM. This means that anyone who plans to upgrade in the future will have to think carefully, as they'll have to swap out their motherboards and even other components. The CPU's big sales numbers can be attributed to its affordable price (around $320), cheaper motherboards and RAM, and the ability to last for years.

One thing to keep in mind is that when it comes to exact sales figures for PC hardware, most retailers and manufacturers tend to keep quiet. So while the numbers from Mindfactory aren't a complete picture of what gamers are buying, the latest Steam hardware survey shows that Intel still accounts for about two-thirds of all CPUs sampled by Steam, for example.

As for why gamers are switching to AMD CPUs, it's likely due to the powerful 3D V-Cache. Additionally, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D ($440) outperforms Intel's Core i9-13900K ($570) in many gaming scenarios.
