Indian police release pigeon wrongly imprisoned for 8 months for wearing anklet suspected to be "spy device" from China.
The pigeon was captured in early May 2023 near a port in Mumbai, after people discovered that its legs were wearing two copper and aluminum rings engraved with Chinese-like characters.
Indian police suspected that this was a Chinese "spy device", so they decided to lock the pigeon in Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit veterinary hospital in Mumbai and opened an investigation into espionage.

After an eight-month investigation, Mumbai police discovered that the pigeon was a Taiwanese racing pigeon that had escaped and wandered into India. Officials agreed to transfer the bird to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Bombay, where vets released it on January 30.
Mumbai police did not respond to a request for comment. This is not the first time a bird has been suspected of espionage by police in India.
In 2020, Kashmiri police captured a pigeon that flew across the military border between Pakistan and India. However, they released the bird after investigating that it was not carrying spy equipment and belonged to a Pakistani fisherman.
In 2016, a pigeon was also captured after a note was found on it containing a threatening message about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
