According to Engadget , Apple's randomized pricing model will allow developers to offer discounts to customers who have subscribed to other services on the App Store, be it the developer's own apps or those of participating partners. It will start with a select group of participants before rolling out to more developers "in the coming months."
Apple is trying to regain the trust of app developers on the App Store
In a post on its developer website, Apple said: "Random pricing for App Store subscriptions allows developers to offer customers a discounted subscription price as long as they actively subscribe to another app. It can be used for subscriptions from one or two different developers."
Apple further explains that the accompanying discounts will be clearly visible to customers both on the App Store and in off-platform marketing channels, so customers can easily find and get the perks.
The discount comes at a time when Apple is under ongoing scrutiny over its App Store practices and how it handles in-app purchases, culminating in Apple's battle with Fortnite owner Epic Games.
This fall, Apple asked the Supreme Court to overturn an earlier ruling that required it to let developers bypass its 30 percent transaction fee by supporting third-party payment systems. The new program is the company’s way of regaining developer trust. The company said it would release more information about the new program next month.
