Experts say planning ahead can help you avoid drinking too much alcohol during the holidays.

"Avoiding" drinking alcohol during holiday gatherings is not easy, because in many cases, clinking glasses is considered a way to increase the joy of the holiday.

But there are simple ways to avoid drinking too much on this special occasion.

Some people experience peer pressure, says Dr. Leah Young, clinical director at the Eating Disorders Treatment Center in Denver, Colorado.

"Avoiding" drinking alcohol and beer during holiday gatherings is not easy.

Dr. Sarah Church, physician - Director of Wholeview Health Care Center (USA), shares some tips to help you control your alcohol consumption during the holidays.

How to control drinking during the holidays

Here are some tips for you.

Savor it slowly . Instead of gulping it down, Dr. Church recommends paying attention to the taste, smell, and appearance of your drink. Use all your senses to notice the color, aroma, mouthfeel, and flavor of your wine or beer, according to the health news site Healthline .

This forces you to slow down and gives your body and mind time to feel the effects of the alcohol.

Rehydrate with water or non-alcoholic beverages. Replace alcoholic beverages with water or other non-alcoholic beverages, such as juice, soda, or non-alcoholic beer and wine, to stay hydrated and regulate your drinking speed.

Dr. Church recommends waiting at least an hour between drinks (which can be accomplished by spacing out your outings). This gives your body enough time to process the alcohol and prevents over-drinking.

Choose quality over quantity. Instead of consuming large quantities of low-quality drinks, Dr. Church suggests switching to higher-quality drinks, such as premium wines, premium spirits, or craft beers.

Higher quality drinks tend to have more subtle flavors that can be enjoyed more slowly. However, be mindful of the alcohol content. These tend to have higher alcohol content, so take that into account when trying to cut down on how often you drink.

Avoid drinking before and after parties. Before attending a party that involves drinking, cut back on your alcohol intake before and after to help your body rest. Saying “no” to alcohol before and after a party is also a good strategy.

Don't stay too long at the party. Dr. Young's advice: Arrive later, leave earlier, or do both. If possible, let the host know in advance that you won't be able to stay long.

Or if you feel overwhelmed, go outside for a break.

How to explain why you don't drink

Dr. Young recommends preparing a few answers, which will vary depending on the person. For example, with a loved one, you might cite mental health, physical health, or avoiding drug interactions.

It's also possible to say: I had a problem with alcohol, so I decided not to drink, says Dr. Young.

Dr. Church advises: Straightforwardness is best. Say something like: I'm going to have to drink less tonight…

According to Healthline , if you are pressured to drink, Dr. Church recommends trying to divert attention by saying something like: I'm thirsty tonight, let me have some water. Or say this is delicious! Try it!...
