Washington state's governor said on November 1 that he had mobilized some members of the US National Guard to stand guard after receiving information and concerns about the possibility of violence related to the 2024 US presidential election.

The state, where Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is expected to easily defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump, was one of two places where ballot boxes were set on fire earlier this week, according to exit polls.

“Based on general and specific information and concerns about the potential for violence or other illegal activity related to the 2024 election, I want to ensure that we are fully prepared to respond,” Gov. Jay Inslee wrote in a letter published on his website on Nov. 1.

More than 2 million people voted early in the state's Vancouver city, but hundreds of ballots were damaged or destroyed by incendiary devices in ballot boxes.

Polls show the two candidates are neck and neck, including in seven battleground states that could decide the national vote.

Currently, a series of public opinion polls show the race is in a stalemate, with Ms. Harris unable to break through in the race to the White House.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on October 29, Ms. Harris's lead over Mr. Trump has narrowed, to 44% compared to 43%, among registered voters.

The Democrat has led her Republican rival in every Reuters/Ipsos poll since she entered the race in July, but her lead has been shrinking since late September. Since October 1, the advantage appears to be tilting slightly toward Trump, though it is not yet clear.

Harris’ campaign has encouraged voters to vote early, and her running mate Tim Walz, along with outgoing President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama, have all exercised their civic rights and responsibilities.

Meanwhile, former President Trump also encouraged his supporters to vote whenever they want.

As of October 31, at least 62.7 million people had voted early, accounting for nearly 40% of the total 2020 vote.

In Georgia, more than 3.5 million people have already voted, or 45% of registered voters, marking a record high. Up to 70% of Georgia voters are expected to vote early in this election.

Several other swing states have seen similar trends.
