A US House committee tasked with investigating an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in July has released a report saying the attack "could have been prevented".

In a 53-page initial report released on October 21, a bipartisan group of US House lawmakers said the investigation team had collected a series of evidence showing that the tragic and shocking developments in the attempted assassination of Mr. Trump "could have been prevented in advance and should not have happened," CBS News reported the same day.

The investigation also found a lack of preparation and coordination between the Secret Service and law enforcement at the event site.

Mr. Trump was shot in the ear while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.

The House committee, consisting of seven Republicans and six Democrats, was tasked with investigating the details of the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump on July 13, while he was campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman grazed Mr. Trump’s ear and was killed by a US Secret Service sniper. One attendee was killed and two others were injured.

The investigation team found that no meetings took place between federal and local law enforcement on the day of the event, nor did they establish a “unified command center” to facilitate communication between the Secret Service and local authorities.

Lawmakers also pointed to a breakdown in communication that allowed the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, to evade local police, climb onto the roof and fire eight shots. In addition, officials failed to properly check the perimeter, including the building where the suspect was aiming his gun. The crowd around the building was also not properly checked, despite having a view of the stage where Mr. Trump spoke.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson said the information from the report showing the US Secret Service's security failures was shocking and inexcusable, emphasizing that Congress would do everything possible to find the truth and bring justice to the victims.

Lawmakers are expected to release a complete investigation report by December 13, along with recommendations to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
