Indonesian newspaper: "Coach Kim Sang Sik benefits from Shin Tae Yong's dismissal"

(Dan Tri) - Indonesian media assessed that the 2025 U23 Southeast Asian Championship of U23 Vietnam had the contribution of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI), with the dismissal of coach Shin Tae Yong.

Mr. Shin Tae Yong is a compatriot and also a senior coach of Coach Kim Sang Sik. Having helped the Korean team defeat the German team at the 2018 World Cup, Coach Shin Tae Yong is one of the highest-ranking coaches in Korean football.

However, earlier this year, Mr. Shin Tae Yong was fired by the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI). That is the reason why the two Korean coaches Shin Tae Yong and Kim Sang Sik will not have the opportunity to meet again at the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 tournament.

Indonesian newspaper Suara wrote: “PSSI fired coach Shin Tae Yong, benefiting Vietnamese football and coach Kim Sang Sik. The Indonesian U23 team could have been stronger if coach Shin Tae Yong had still led the team.”

“In the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 tournament (taking place on July 29) at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta (Indonesia), between U23 Indonesia and U23 Vietnam, the away team was the winner.

This is the third consecutive U23 Southeast Asian championship for U23 Vietnam. Meanwhile, U23 Indonesia once again failed to win the cup. The young team from the archipelago received the second place result, similar to the last tournament (2023)," Suara added.

According to the newspaper of the archipelago country, if coach Shin Tae Yong was still in charge of the U23 Indonesia team, he would have a way to predict the playing style built by his compatriot coach Kim Sang Sik.

Suara newspaper analyzed: "Coach Shin Tae Yong himself has not led the Indonesian teams since the beginning of 2025, after PSSI decided to fire the Korean coach."

“After that, PSSI appointed Dutch coach Gerald Vanenburg to lead the Indonesian U23 team. The challenges for coach Kim Sang Sik and the Vietnamese U23 team could have been greater if the Indonesian U23 team was still led by coach Shin Tae Yong,” the Suara newspaper wrote.

To reinforce his opinion, Suara newspaper quoted coach Kim Sang Sik in a recent Korean newspaper: "If coach Shin Tae Yong is still leading the Indonesian U23 team, I think it will be more difficult to face the young team from the archipelago country in the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 tournament."

“Coach Shin Tae Yong has special qualities. I hope he continues to be successful in his home country of Korea. I am very happy to hear that Coach Shin Tae Yong is returning to work, leading Ulsan Hyundai Club (Korea),” the Indonesian newspaper continued to quote Coach Kim Sang Sik.
