Vietnam Social Security issues warning about rumor of increasing health insurance premium from July 1

Social media has recently been flooded with information that from July 1, the health insurance premium will increase from 4.5% to 6%. The Vietnam Social Security Agency has just issued a warning about this rumor.

This agency affirms: Currently, there are no regulations on adjusting the increase in health insurance premiums from the above-mentioned time.

Vietnam Social Security cited the provisions of Article 13 of Law No. 51/2024/QH15 amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Health Insurance, which stipulates that the health insurance contribution rate of participating groups can be up to 6% of the monthly salary used as the basis for compulsory social insurance contribution or the reference level,...

"However, this is not an immediate applicable level but only the maximum contribution ceiling allowed within the legal framework," said a representative of Vietnam Social Security. Depending on specific conditions, when necessary, the Government will consider adjusting the appropriate contribution level to ensure the rights of participants and balance the health insurance fund in the long term.

Currently, the health insurance contribution rate remains at 4.5% of the basic salary (the current basic salary is 2,340,000 VND/month). If there is any adjustment to the contribution rate, the Government will issue a Decree to implement it.

"Therefore, the information that the contribution rate will increase to 6% from July 1 is inaccurate, causing confusion among the public," the agency affirmed.

At the same time, Vietnam Social Security noted that people participating in family health insurance, if required to pay higher than 4.5% of the basic salary, need to request the organization or individual collecting health insurance to provide a clear legal basis, especially the Decree related to adjusting the contribution level.

Currently, the Ministry of Health is in charge of drafting a Decree guiding the implementation of Law No. 51/2024/QH15. While waiting for the official guidance document to be issued, the Social Insurance Agency recommends that people and employees should only access information from official sources such as: the Government's Electronic Information Portal, the Ministry of Health , Vietnam Social Insurance and central and local news agencies and newspapers.

"Any act of intentionally posting or sharing false information to distort policies or take advantage of them for personal gain or to appropriate people's property will be strictly handled according to the law," the agency affirmed.
