'Thai football still cannot surpass the regional level'

Thai media admitted that the country's football continued to decline when it had to stop at the semi-finals of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, raising big questions about its ambition to "reach new heights".

The home team's defeat to U23 Indonesia in the semi-finals and only third place at the 2025 U23 Southeast Asia Championship disappointed the Thai media. "We have talked about surpassing Southeast Asia. But the results at the recent U23 tournament show that we are not superior to the region. When will we reach new heights?" commented Thairath newspaper.

Thairath believes that the current generation of players does not have enough strength and potential to surpass Vietnam or Indonesia. The main reason lies in the fact that most of the players in the Thai U23 squad are not mainstays at their home clubs. When they do not play regularly, young players lack physical strength, tactical thinking and confidence.

In this year's tournament, Thailand U23 has some outstanding players such as striker Yotsakorn Burapha or goalkeeper Sorawat Phosaman. However, according to Thairath , these players still need more time to improve. They also need more opportunities to play to develop themselves.

Siam Sports pointed out a worrying problem of the country's football: "Despite having a more professional club system and national championship than the rest of Southeast Asia, Thai football has not really surpassed Southeast Asia." Siam Sports believes that the current U23 team passes the ball poorly, controls the game poorly and shows a lack of confidence even when facing the Philippines.

Thai media expect these shortcomings to improve when the team enters the 2026 AFC U23 qualifiers in September and the 33rd SEA Games in December.
