Firefighting and rescue drills are annual activities at the Saigon River Tunnel, aiming to increase initiative and minimize damage when fires and explosions occur. In addition to drills to handle situations, an automatic fire extinguishing system has been installed in the tunnel to promptly handle any incidents that may arise.

The Saigon River Tunnel, invested with over 2,000 billion VND and put into operation 12 years ago, is the most important part of the East-West Highway. The tunnel is 1.49 km long, 33 m wide, 9 m high with 6 lanes (3 lanes on each side for cars and motorbikes); the speed reaches 60 km/h. Currently, there are about 55,000 cars and 300,000 motorbikes passing through the tunnel every day.
