Need to spread awareness that getting a PhD is not just about getting a degree

According to Professor Vu Ha Van, the biggest contribution of the VINGROUP Innovation Fund is not only to sponsor more than 900 billion VND for Vietnamese science but also to spread awareness that getting a PhD is not only to get a degree or title, but also to learn a profession.

22% of scientific research projects funded by VinIF are commercialized

This afternoon, the VINGROUP Innovation Fund (VinIF) announced its 2024 funding programs. The total funding amount is over VND100 billion. At the announcement ceremony, Professor Vu Ha Van, Scientific Director of VinIF, emphasized the fund's contribution to Vietnamese science in creating a new culture and style of scientific and research activities.

This is the 6th consecutive year that VinIF has supported the realization of potential research and projects, with a total funding of more than 900 billion VND. The program has supported more than 3,500 scientists and funded 124 projects. The rate of projects that have commercialized products is 22%. According to Professor Vu Ha Van, this 22% is a relatively high number compared to scientific research projects.

By the end of 2024, VinIF has funded 748 master's scholarships, 787 doctoral scholarships, and 240 postdoctoral scholarships. Among the scientists receiving funding from VinIF, many have been recognized at the national and international levels.

"Each year, VinIF only grants postdoctoral scholarships to about 100 people out of thousands of young scientists nationwide. But of the 30 young scientists who received the Golden Globe Award in the past 3 years, 10 have received and are receiving VinIF scholarships," said Professor Vu Ha Van.

Help young scientists not to worry about "making ends meet"

According to Professor Vu Ha Van, the greatest achievement that VinIF has created is not only the above numbers, but also its contribution to changing positive thinking, creating a new culture and style of scientific and research activities in the country.

VinIF's activities over the past 6 years have been consistent with two main pillars: one is to change the domestic scientific research environment, the other is to build young science and technology human resources and focus on outstanding individuals to create breakthroughs.

The fund's leadership's expectation is to contribute to creating a new working culture, a scientific, benevolent and creative working style in the country. The beneficiaries of the fund are not only experienced scientists but also young scientists. VinIF gives them an opportunity to be creative without having to worry too much about cumbersome administrative procedures and the "bread and butter" of research.

"We also want young scientists, those who are starting their scientific career, to consider it a profession. That means doing a PhD is not just to get a degree but to do a job to become a scientist. We are glad that this mindset has spread in the community," said Professor Vu Ha Van.

Professor Vu Ha Van pledged that VinIF will always accompany the Vietnamese scientific community on the path of changing thinking and fulfilling social responsibility. "However, creating the right awareness about the role of science and scientific research depends on you, the scientists. How you think about science is how it will treat you," said Professor Vu Ha Van.
