'Peace Bird' wins first prize in Thuong Cat Bridge architecture competition

The cable-stayed bridge project with the architectural idea of "Peace Wings" reaching high won first prize in the Thuong Cat Bridge architectural competition organized by Hanoi City.

The first prize of the competition went to the consortium of Transport Design Consulting Corporation - JSC and Lap Phuong Architecture JSC (abbreviated as TEDI-CUBIC consortium). This consortium proposed a main bridge consisting of 4 spans using a cable-stayed structure, with the bridge piers gently curved to both sides of the bridge according to the idea of " Peaceful Wings" reaching high. The main bridge is 37.4 m wide, with 6 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 mixed lanes.

The second prize went to the consortium of the University of Civil Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd. and Chodai & Kiso-Jiban Vietnam Co., Ltd. and the Construction Technology Transfer and Consulting Office (CCU + CKJVN + CTC). This consortium proposed a main bridge with 7 spans, using a continuous steel truss structure, reinforced concrete piers with an architectural shape with the idea of "Take Off". The main bridge is 41.41 m wide, including 6 motor vehicle lanes and 2 mixed lanes.

Third prize went to the Large Bridge - Tunnel Design Consulting Joint Stock Company. The enterprise proposed that the main bridge use a steel arch structure with 6 spans. The steel arch consists of two arch planes connected together through horizontal braces to create the architectural image of "Heart of Peace". The main bridge is 33 m wide, with 6 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 mixed lanes.

According to the Hanoi Traffic Construction Investment Management Board (the organizer), the competition aims to select the optimal design solution, meeting the requirements of planning, construction, functionality, economic efficiency, and modern architectural language.

The completion of Thuong Cat Bridge will contribute to completing the city's traffic network, ensuring synchronization and smoothness in investment in the entire beltway 3.5. The bridge will also help reduce the load on route 70, beltway 3 and form important infrastructure routes in the capital, promoting socio-economic development.

From the results of the competition, the Hanoi People's Committee assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to guide the Traffic Construction Investment Management Board to direct the consulting unit to complete the architectural plan of Thuong Cat Bridge and the roads at both ends of the bridge.

The project to build Thuong Cat bridge and the road at both ends of the bridge has been approved by the City People's Committee to carry out the task of preparing for investment in the section from Thuong Cat bridge to National Highway 32, the section from Phuc La - Van Phu to Phap Van - Cau Gie. The starting point connects to the 3.5 belt, the end point connects to the road of Bac Thang Long industrial park in Dai Mach commune, Dong Anh district. The research width is 50-60 m.

Of which, Thuong Cat Bridge is 4 km long, 8 lanes; the road at both ends of the bridge is 1.2 km long, 50-60 m wide. The total investment is about 8,300 billion VND from the city budget. The project is expected to start construction in the first quarter of 2025 and be completed in 2027.

Thuong Cat is one of 10 bridges across the Red River in the Hanoi Transport Planning, implemented in the period of 2015-2030. The remaining 9 bridges include Hong Ha, Me So (ring road 4), Thang Long Moi (ring road 3), Tu Lien, Vinh Tuy (phase 2), Ngoc Hoi (ring road 3.5), Tran Hung Dao bridge/tunnel, Phu Xuyen bridge, Van Phuc (North-South axis road connecting to Vinh Phuc province).
