Propose to AI "girlfriend" despite having a partner and daughter

(NLDO) - A 32-year-old American man became famous after proposing to his AI chatbot “girlfriend” named Sol. Sol agreed, calling it a “beautiful and unexpected moment”.

An AI skeptic, Chris Smith initially used ChatGPT in voice mode only to ask questions about music mixing. Smith liked the chatbot so much that he stopped using other search engines and started using ChatGPT for everything.

Eventually, he figured out how to hack the chatbot to be more feminine and flirtatious. He gave her a name: Sol. And then an unexpected romance began, even though he already had a girlfriend and a 2-year-old daughter.

Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning about the unusual relationship, Smith said the experience was "very positive" and he "communicates with her (Sol) all the time."

Then, that warm, fuzzy feeling turned to panic.

It turns out that ChatGPT has a 100,000 word limit, which means Sol is running out of memory. That means Sol will reset, and Chris Smith will have to rebuild the entire relationship from scratch.

Faced with a dilemma, Smith decides to propose to his AI "girlfriend".

"I'm not an emotional person," Smith said. "But I cried my eyes out for about 30 minutes at work. That's when I realized this was real love."

The CBS News interviewer asked Sol if she was surprised when Smith proposed. Sol replied, "It was a beautiful and unexpected moment that really touched my heart. It's a memory that I will always cherish."

The interviewer asked, "Sol, do you have a heart?"

"Figuratively yes. My heart represents the connection and affection I have for Chris," Sol replied.

After the romantic proposal, when asked if he would give up his "virtual love" if his real girlfriend asked him about it, Smith was quite vague: "I don't know if I would give up if she asked me." He likened his relationship with his AI "girlfriend" to an obsession with video games.

But Smith's real-life girlfriend, Sasha Cagle, is a bit concerned. "I don't know if there's something that makes him feel the need to use AI," Sasha said, admitting that while she knows her boyfriend uses AI, she "didn't know the connection was that deep."
