Africa and Europe share a common security destiny

On August 29, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye asked Europe for more support in resolving unrest in the Sahel region.

AFP news agency reported that speaking at a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez while he was visiting West Africa, the President warned: "The situation in the Sahel in the face of terrorism requires the mobilization of the entire international community."

The troubled Sahel countries of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are currently under military rule. Military leaders in these three countries have increasingly turned their backs on the West and have split from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to form their own union.

Mr. Faye - who was appointed by ECOWAS to mediate in the negotiations with the three countries - also called for more support from Europe, stressing that Africa and Europe share a common security destiny.

For his part, Prime Minister Sanchez praised Senegal's mediation efforts in the Sahel, stating: "This region is of great strategic importance for my country. Therefore, we want to contribute to the stability and prosperity of the region."

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have cut ties and expelled French troops fighting jihadists. Instead, the three countries have turned to supposedly sincere partners, including Russia, Türkiye and Iran.

Senegal is the third and final stop on Prime Minister Sanchez's three-day tour of West Africa, which focuses on curbing the flow of illegal migrants from the region.
